Key facts:

  • Who: Olav Magnus Fossland Løkken, Aziwell
  • Role: Assembles Azidrills shipped to operations worldwide
  • Where: Canada, directional core drilling operations
  • Goal: Connect workshop learning with real drilling, and see how work at HQ affects operations around the world

Why Aziwell sent Olav Magnus to Canada

At Aziwell, we take great pride in our approach to training and developing the members of our team. Olav Magnus Fossland Løkken, joined us earlier this year in a role that sees him assembling Azidrills which are then sent out for global operations. To better understand how the tools behave while being used, he was sent on a field deployment in Canada, to support the directional core drilling operations there.

There is no better way to cement theoretical knowledge than by practicing what you learned in a real-life scenario. As such, the goal of the trip was to give more substance to the concepts that he was learning in the workshop, and to see how his work at Aziwell’s HQ affects the drilling operations around the World.

After his return to Norway, we sat down for a chat and asked him a few questions about his experience in Canada.

Field Experience: Interview with Olav Magnus

What would you say is the highlight of your study trip?

“First of all, it was a really great opportunity to go out in the field like that and learn more about the trade,”
says Olav Magnus
“But it was a very nice experience to know the drill as more than just a tool that is waiting to be assembled on a table, and to work with it, the drillers, and the technicians.”

How were you received by our Canadian colleagues?

“It was really nice,” he laughs. “I got sick while traveling, so it took me a few days to get back on my feet, but once I was functioning again, I worked with some very nice people there. They were very helpful, they answered all my questions, even my dumbest ones, and I really hope to see and work with them again.”

Is there anything specific that you learned?

“Everything was interesting for me, since I am fairly new to drilling” he says, “but it was particularly good for me to be where the gold is found, as they say. Even at times when there was not a lot of drilling, I learned a lot by maintaining the tools in the workshop, since it’s very different to work on a tool that was used to drill deep underground versus one that was taken fresh off the shelf.”

Continuing with what he learned about operating the Azidrill, ‍

“It was also very good to understand a few notions about how to actually drill with the tool, though I might’ve lost a couple things here and there due to my bad French,” he laughs.

How do you think you’ll be able to integrate what you learned in your day-to-day work?

“That’s the most important thing, right?”
Olav Magnus says.
“By being there, touching the Azidrill in the field and seeing how it affects the operations, I got a clearer sense of the connection between warehouse and field work. It is crucial that we do good work here in Trondheim, that our tools are of the highest quality, and that we ship them out on time across the Globe. It certainly is our goal to do the best work we can in the warehouse, so our Worldwide operations get the best possible support.”

We thank Olav Magnus for his willingness to share his experience with us, and we wish him all the best in his career with Aziwell, where he will definitely have the opportunity to further ship countless Azidrill to our directional drilling operations.
